Ukraine, the second-largest country in Europe, is located in Eastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Poland and Russia. Comparatively, Ukraine is slightly smaller than the state of Texas with a total area of 603,700 sq km (233,090 sq mi). Ukraine shares boundaries with Belarus on the North, Russia on the East, the Black Sea on the South, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, and Slovakia on the West, and Poland on the North-West. Climate

The climate is subtropical on the Crimean Peninsula. Precipitation is disproportionately distributed, highest in the west and north, least in the east and southeast. Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland. Summers are warm across the greater part of the country, except for the south where it becomes hot. The rest of the country's climate is temperate. The mean temperature in July is about 10°c (66°f). In January, however, the mean temperature drops to -6°c (21°f). Average rainfall is 50 cm (20 in) a year, with variations in different regions.

Population

The population of Ukraine was estimated by the United Nations (UN) at 47,110,000, which placed it at number 26 in population among the 193 nations of the world. The approximately 16% of the population was over 65 years of age, with another 15% of the population under 15 years of age. There were 85 males for every 100 females in the country. The projected population for the year 2025 was 41,650,000.

The capital of Ukraine is Kiev. Kiev is one of the biggest cities in Europe. It is a bustling capital of independent Ukraine, its administrative, economic, scientific, cultural and educational center. Kiev is a city of invaluable historical and cultural monuments, a city of great events and outstanding people.
